Car Fuel Cost Calculator
Calculate the total fuel cost and consumption for your next road trip (Metric & Imperial).
Planning a road trip or a daily commute? Our Car Fuel Cost Calculator helps you estimate exactly how much you’ll spend on gas or diesel. By understanding your vehicle’s fuel efficiency and current fuel prices, you can budget accurately for any journey.
How Fuel Costs are Calculated
The math behind fuel consumption is straightforward, but it varies depending on which system of measurement you use.
Metric System (L/100km)
In most of the world, fuel efficiency is measured in Liters per 100 Kilometers.
Total Cost = (Distance / 100) × Efficiency × Price per Liter
Example: A 500km trip in a car that uses 6.5L/100km, with fuel at €1.80/L:
(500 / 100) × 6.5 × 1.80 = €58.50
Imperial System (MPG)
In the US and UK, fuel efficiency is measured in Miles per Gallon.
Total Cost = (Distance / MPG) × Price per Gallon
Factors that Affect Fuel Efficiency
Your car’s “official” rating is often different from reality. Consider these factors when entering your efficiency:
- Driving Style: High speeds and rapid acceleration significantly increase fuel consumption.
- Vehicle Load: A car full of passengers and luggage is heavier and requires more energy to move.
- Tire Pressure: Under-inflated tires create more rolling resistance, lowering your MPG.
- Terrain: Climbing hills or driving on stop-and-go city streets is much less efficient than steady highway cruising.
Driving Tips to Save Money
- Maintain a Steady Speed: Using cruise control on the highway can improve efficiency by avoiding unnecessary speed fluctuations.
- Reduce Drag: Roof racks and open windows at high speeds create aerodynamic drag. Removing them when not needed can save up to 10% on fuel.
- Service Your Vehicle: Regular oil changes and clean air filters keep your engine running at peak efficiency.
How to use this tool
- Choose your Units: Toggle between Metric (Kilometers/Liters) and Imperial (Miles/Gallons).
- Enter Distance: The total length of your planned journey.
- Enter Efficiency: Your car’s average fuel consumption.
- Enter Price: The current cost of fuel at the pump.
- Add Passengers: (Optional) If you’re splitting the cost with friends, enter the number of people to see the cost per person.
